Timetable for A day in The Life Project
This week I am nominating students to join the project and introduce IEARN and the related skills to them. We will start visiting historical places by 9th of April. In the week after there will be a discussion of what students think about the place they have visited. We will be working on the project twice a week.
Specific lessons: Introduction
• How will you present this project to your students?
I will start with an orientating IEARN slide show and I will elicit some ideas from students about the video. Then I can start short discussion about IEARN. Then we go to IEARN website and I will ask students to tell what they can see there. We go through the website exploring it together. Eventually we come across the Historical places project and we will start exploring it.
At the end of the session we will be discussing the Buddy Contract and sign it. I will be sending letters to students' parents to put them in the picture and to get their approval for their children's participation.
• How will you tie it into their curricular studies?
Since they are English language learners, my students will be practicing English which is the main purpose for them to use IEARN projects
• How will you get them interested in the topic?
My students are really excited to visit the historical places and write about them and share their work with people overseas. In addition, the idea of using the internet to share their writings is a new thing and I think it is going to be very spectacular.
• What background knowledge do your students bring to the project?
Though my students are good in using computers and internet, they are not really acquainted with IEARN. Some of them are privileged to know about face-book and other social web tools. Nevertheless, they have never experienced internet as an educational tool. My students will share their knowledge about their own history with others around the globe. By that, they will enrich the knowledge of other participants who do not know about this particular country.
Productivity of work
• Will your students need to do research for their project?
In fact, the local history project is a research based project. Students need to use different methods of searching to collect data and present it in a creative way.
• How will they be organized to gather information?
Students are formed according to their interest. Each group has to select a particular historical place which they are interested in. each member of the group is responsible to collect data in which every one use a method that is not used by the another member. For example, one can use interview, another can use books and another can use the internet.
• Who will be responsible and in charge?
Assigned groups leaders are in charge. The leader of the each group is responsible to conduct the meetings for his group to discuss and put the data together before presenting and discussing it with the teacher and the other groups' members.
• How you will handle the e-mail exchanges, how often, who will be in charge?
I will assign one of the students who is really savvy in using the email facility to take care of this matter at least twice a week. Myself I am assigning one day a week to check on the emails and provide guidance.
Collaboration
• How and when will your students collaborate or communicate with other students in the iEARN network?
My students are fairly acquainted with the web tools 2.0. They can communicate using face book for example, twitter and msn . What good with these web tools is that they are accessible at anytime so students can choose the time to communicate with other students.
Assessment of Student Work
• How will the appropriateness of student work be evaluated?
Since Local history project enclose different kinds of activities, I will provide a checklist with all the criteria that students need to meet.
The appropriateness of students' work will be evaluated by the students themselves as well as the checklist that they will prepare before the start of the project. I will do the project in groups and each group will be having a group leader who will be responsible to report about the progress of project. While on the other hand, a checklist of items will also be prepared which will be used in the evaluation of the students.
• How will you assess the student work?
Student's work will be assessed on the content, appropriate usage of the language and the creativity on presenting the work during the three stages; introduction stage of the project, the implementation of the project and conclusion of the project
.
Conclusion of activity
• When does your participation in the project end?
My project ends with the end of school year.
• How will the students draw their projects to a conclusion?
